Roadside Help

Take a breath. These steps keep you safe first, then deal with the car.

If anyone is hurt, or you see fire or smoke, call 911 first. People matter more than the car, every time.

  1. 1Pull as far off the road as you safely can and turn on your hazard lights.
  2. 2If you have reflective triangles or a vest, set them out when it is safe to do so.
  3. 3Stay on the side away from traffic. In the dark, wait inside with your seatbelt on and call for help.
  4. 4If you have a spare, jack, and tools — and it is safe — change the tire as your manual directs.
  5. 5If you do not, call roadside assistance. Many cars now carry an inflation kit instead of a spare.

Never change a tire in moving traffic or on a curve you cannot see past. Call for help instead.
